How are your firelogs different from other supermarket firelogs?
GoodwoodŽ Firelogs are 100% wood, produced from surplus hardwood material. Most supermarket firelogs are made of petroleum or vegetable wax and other industrial by-products. For more detail, look at our "Know What You're Burning" page.

How do your firelogs compare to cordwood?
A full cord of wood is approximately 90 cubic ft, weighs 3000 lbs, has a moisture content of 20% and a net heating value of approximately 15.3M Btu's. A pallet of GoodwoodŽ Firelogs weighs 2200 lbs, has a moisture content of 5% and a net heating value of 17.2M Btu's. The price of a Goodwood pallet is roughly comparable to the price for a cord of wood, however you will find that cordwood pricing, quality and availability fluctuates greatly. It is good to know that Goodwood pricing, quality, availability, environmental advantages, and overall convenience, will remain consistent throughout the year.

Can I use Goodwood Firelogs in my wood stove?
YES! Densified fuels, including all-wood firelogs and pellets, are preferred for woodstoves and heating. It is important to understand your fireplace, chimenea or wood stove heat rating --- some manufacturers say not to burn more than three densified wood logs at a time because too much heat may be produced.

Where does the wood come from?
The wood shavings used for GoodwoodŽ Firelogs are derived from the milling of domestic hardwood lumber, typically a mix of 70% oak plus maple, cherry, poplar and alder. Our preference for hardwood versus softwood material is based on sustainable forestry: nearly twice as much hardwood grows as is harvested every year. This is due to the fact that in hardwood forestry, the predominant harvesting method is single-tree selection - not clear-cutting as is typical of conifers (softwoods). The diversion of this hardwood biomass from landfill to densified wood production ensures that tens of thousands of pounds of millwaste are utilized weekly.

How long does a GoodwoodŽ fire burn?
As with regular firewood, the duration of a wood fire varies depending on airflow, placement of logs and tending. Pound for pound, densified wood firelogs burn longer than firewood. In an open fireplace, our easy-light bag burns for 1.5-2 hours. Our retail box containing 15+ lbs firelogs and a kindling starter bag burns for up to 5 hours.

Why a burlap bag?
We tested many tree-free fibers and ultimately selected jute, a fiber derived from the woody stem of an annual plant that grows abundantly throughout Asia and West Africa. We use a hydrocarbon-free jute burlap that lights easily, burns cleanly and has a pleasant, natural scent. The jute ignites the woodchips and densified firelog pieces inside.
