All-Wood Alternative to Firewood Can Reduce Soot, Smoke by Half

Increased Use Could Ease Burn Restrictions

WATSONVILLE, CA --- California's Central Valley has some of the State's worst air pollution and is experiencing both recommended and mandatory no-burn days in part because of smoke from wood burning. Using "densified wood" firelogs instead of firewood has been shown to reduce soot and smoke emissions by about 50%, suggesting that more widespread use could help Valley residents experience fewer burn restriction days.

Because these logs are made from all wood, they are suitable for home heating and wood stoves in contrast to wax logs. The esthetic appearance of the fire and pleasant natural wood smell is also preferred by many users. More wood can be added, and the logs can be arranged, poked, and tended to obtain the best results.

"More wood burners using this alternative fuel should go a long way towards reducing the need for mandatory burn restrictions," according to Gregg Weissman of Summit Views, LLC. "Since many people cannot or will not use other artificial logs, all-wood logs with half the emissions of firewood are very beneficial. Tens of tons of smoke and soot could be removed from the Valley's air by using densified wood firelogs, with little or no sacrifice in esthetic," said Mr. Weissman.

The California Air Resources Board Woodburning Handbook recommends use of densified wood. As described in the Handbook, a large portion of the energy of burning wood goes into boiling off the water and volatile organic compounds present in the wood. In densified wood logs, 95% of the water content and much of the volatile material has been cooked out of the wood in environmentally controlled equipment. The resulting fire burns hotter, and little energy goes into burning off waste compounds, resulting in less soot, ash, and creosote. Studies show that carbon monoxide and acid rain emissions are also reduced.
